HIMSS Foundation Professional Certification Grant: What It Is & How to Apply (2026 Guide)

Listen — last year around this exact time, I told my private career coaching group about this grant and folks went running to apply. And guess what? HIMSS is doing it AGAIN for 2026. Don’t say I didn’t tell you. 👀

With everything shifting in healthcare and tech — especially with AI reshaping job roles, workflows, and skill expectations — this is one of the best career growth opportunities in health IT right now.

If you're pursuing a job search in digital health, leveling up your skills, or you’ve been debating adding a certification to your toolkit, the HIMSS Foundation Professional Certification Grant might be the sign you've been waiting on.

The HIMSS Foundation, through the Global Health Equity Network, created this grant to close two major gaps:

  • The shortage of skilled professionals entering health information and technology careers
  • The underrepresentation of marginalized communities in the field

This program provides financial support, resources, and exam preparation for professionals, students, and veterans pursuing one of three HIMSS certifications:

  • CAHIMSÂŽ – Certified Associate in Healthcare Information & Management Systems
  • CPHIMSÂŽ – Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems
  • CPDHTSÂŽ – Certified Professional in Digital Health Transformation Strategy

This isn’t just a scholarship. It’s a full-on, structured, career-elevating program designed to help you build credibility and momentum in health IT.

Why the HIMSS Grant Matters in 2026

Healthcare is moving faster than ever — AI adoption, automation, interoperability requirements, and digital transformation are rewriting job descriptions in real time. Certifications like CAHIMS®, CPHIMS®, and CPDHTS® help you:

  • Demonstrate technical credibility in health information and technology
  • Unlock leadership-track roles in digital health and informatics
  • Stand out in competitive job searches
  • Increase your earning potential and negotiating power
  • Get recognized globally in the health IT space

And for my folks from underrepresented backgrounds? This grant removes the biggest barrier of all — the cost.

What Are CAHIMS, CPHIMS, and CPDHTS?

If you’re thinking, “Okay, but what are these certifications and what do they actually mean?” let’s break it down:

  • CAHIMSÂŽ is ideal if you’re earlier in your health IT journey or transitioning into the field. It validates your foundational knowledge of healthcare information and management systems.
  • CPHIMSÂŽ is more advanced and geared toward professionals with experience in health information and technology, operations, or leadership who want to demonstrate mastery and readiness for higher responsibility.
  • CPDHTSÂŽ focuses on digital health transformation strategy — think AI, consumer health, innovation, and large-scale digital change in health systems.

Together, these certifications sit at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and leadership — the exact space where the industry is growing the fastest.

Are HIMSS Certifications Really Valuable?

Another fair question: “Are these certifications actually worth it, especially if job postings don’t list them?”

Here’s the truth: certifications are part of your credential stack. They’re not your whole story, but they can absolutely strengthen your positioning, especially when you’re intentional about your job search and overall career strategy.

There have been times as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) that I’ve applied for roles that did not require RHIT certification. The posting didn’t ask for it. But because I had that credential, I could:

  • Use it to qualify myself for the opportunity
  • Stand out from candidates with similar experience but fewer credentials
  • Sometimes even ask for an above-average pay rate because of the added value I bring

The same logic applies here. Even if a company isn’t explicitly asking for CAHIMS, CPHIMS, or CPDHTS, that doesn’t mean these credentials won’t help you. What matters is that:

  • You have a clear career strategy, not just a random list of letters after your name
  • Your certifications align with the types of roles, organizations, and impact you’re aiming for
  • You’re making an informed decision about whether a certification supports your goals at this stage

And let’s be real: if you have the opportunity to obtain a high-value certification for free or very low cost through a grant like this? That’s a win–win certification situation.

Just make sure you also do your due diligence on the long-term costs: find out what it takes to maintain the certification after you complete the program (renewal fees, continuing education requirements, membership dues, etc.), so you’re not surprised later if you win the grant.

What Roles Can I Go After With These Certifications?

Now let’s talk outcomes, because that’s what you’re really wondering: “If I get one of these certifications, what kind of roles can I reasonably target?”

Every career path is unique, and a certification alone won’t magically place you in a senior role — but it can absolutely make you more competitive and credible for roles like:

  • Medical Imaging Information System Manager
  • EMR & Clinical Applications Analyst
  • Manager, Informatics and Training – Epic
  • EMR Cerner Application Analyst
  • Epic Applications Analyst
  • Healthcare Application Specialist
  • Enterprise Architect
  • Chief Information Officer (CIO)
  • Senior Manager of Health Information Technology
  • Clinical Informatics Analyst

Job titles will vary by organization, but these are the kinds of health IT, informatics, digital health, and leadership roles where HIMSS certifications can carry weight — especially when combined with your degrees, licenses, existing certifications, and real-world experience.

Think of it like this: you’re not just collecting credentials; you’re building a career brand. The goal is a strategic stack — your education, experience, certifications, and your resume all working together to tell a clear story about the value you bring to the table.
